Once the second quarter began in Sturday's division four girls' state basketball championsip, Newman Catholic left no doubt it would bring its second girls' state basketball title home to Wausau. Over the final 24 minutes, the Cardinals outscored Black Hawk 49-16 to turn a one-point game into a 34-point blowout and run away with the gold ball.

"Going into the game I thought it would be a very close game and we really played well, we shot well, we played defense well and to win a game by that much is just hard to even fathom," Newman head coach Tom Weinkauf said.

"You go into that game expecting it to be knit and tuck to the end, so we thought it was close, but it was really surprising it ended up being that big of a spread.

The blowout wasn't anything new for the Cardinals, who won each of their 29 games this season by an average of 30 points and closed the year on a 19-game winning streak.

"I think it speaks a lot to our talent levels that we have and also our ability to come out and play hard every single game," Newman junior Taylor Thomas said. "We make sure that everyone matters and we're not going to get intimidated, but we're going to go out there and do our thing and hope for the best with the outcome."

As newly crowned state champs, the Cardinals are enjoying the moment, but with only one player graduating, they can't help thinking aboutr a repeat championship nest season.

"We will miss Katie next year, but we'll be just as strong and I think we're all excitedto know that we can return to state again and do well," said Newman sophomore Brianna Jehn.

"I would love to start basketball season all over again right now," Newman junior Erica Hartke said. "I feel like our whole team is like that. We love the sport, we love playing together. We're just one big family and we can't wait to get back on the court together."
