MILWAUKEE (WAOW) – Chelsea Hensler (Waterloo) pitched just the 15th no-hitter in the 28 year history of UW-Stevens Point softball history on Thursday afternoon in the second game of a two game sweep of the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch University. The Pointers won the opener 17-4 and earned the 10-0 shutout behind Hensler in game two.
Hensler's no-hitter was the second by the Pointers over Cardinal Stritch, with Jeanann Brinski throwing perfect game against the Wolves back in 2002. Hensler's only blemish on the day was a fourth inning walk with one out, but the batter only reached second base before she put an end to the inning with a fly-out to left field.
The Pointers provided plenty of offense to back up Hensler's performance, as the team collected 11 hits and pushed 10 runs across the plate, ending the game in five innings by run rule. Sarah Butts finished the day 3-for-3 with a double and a home run, driving in five runs. Megan Tracey and Kristen Selbach each reached base twice on the day, scoring both times.
The Pointers started hot on the day, posting an eight run third inning, already adding to a 6-0 lead to pull away from the Wolves for a 17-4 victory. Michelle Jones earned the victory pitching three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Melissa Wenig finished game one 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and five RBI.
The Pointers (11-5) return to action on April 6 in their home opener when they kick off the 2010 conference season with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against UW-Platteville at McCarty Memorial Field.
