CLEVELAND (WAOW) - The University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point jumped 17 spots in the latest Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings, ranking fourth in the final winter standings. The Pointers sit in fourth place with 515.50 points after winning the men's basketball championship and placing fifth in the women's basketball tournament.
Other strong showings by men's and women's swimming, men's and women's track and field and wrestling gave the Pointers 465.50 points from the winter sports alone.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each school's NCAA Division III postseason finish in up to nine sports for men and nine for women. Each national champion received 100 points.
The Pointers have finished in the top-25 of the prestigious Directors cup for 12 straight seasons. UW-Stevens Point is also the only public university in the top-6.
Williams College, who the Pointers defeated for the Division III men's basketball title, holds on to the top spot in the standings, scoring 529.75 points in the winter seasons to push their point total to 896.75. Amherst (Mass.) sits in second while Washington University (Mo.) is in third.
Fellow Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member UW-La Crosse ranks 7th in the latest standings while UW-Whitewater ranks 10th. Also appearing in the standings, UW-Oshkosh ranks 14th, UW-Eau Claire 22nd, UW-Platteville ranks 50th, UW-River Falls 79th and UW-Stout 208th.
The first Division III spring standings will be released Thursday, May 27, 2010.
