WPS requests to raise electric and gas rates

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Your electric bill could increase.

Wisconsin Public Service filed a request to raise electric rates by 6.9 percent.

If approved, the monthly increase would be about $5.31 for typical residential customers using  595 kilowatt-hours of electricity.

Wisconsin Public Service also filed a request to increase natural gas rates by 1.2 percent. That would mean a typical customer's bill would increase about 94 cents a month when using 756 therms annually.

WPS blames the price increase proposal on the struggling economy and energy efficiency efforts.

There's no word on when the request will be reviewed.
