Area veterans work to expand Memorial Park

ROTHSCHILD (WAOW) -- Area veterans have big plans to expand Rothschild's Memorial Park, but they need your help to make it a reality.

Local VFW organizations worked hard over the past few years bringing Veterans Memorial Park to the greater Wausau community. Now they want to honor the mothers of fallen soldiers.

Veterans Memorial Park in Rothschild became a reality on Veterans Day three years ago. Currently, this Blue Star mMemorial and Fallen Soldier bronze statue stand in the park. Now they want to expand, honoring 'Gold Star Mothers'.

Fundraiser Jessica Maple says, "The Gold Star Mothers are a group of women that have lost their son or daughter to the tragedy of war and it's so important because here we have honored the fallen soldier and it's only natural to next honor the families because without each successful mission we have we cannot do that without the support of our families."

They plan to put a six foot bronzed statue in the open area near the park, but cost is the only thing standing in their way. The estimated price tag of the statue and labor is $110,000.

That's why they're selling gold plated pins across the state.

Mark Mugavero of VFW Post 8280 says, "There's a lot residents in Rothschild, Schofield, Weston, the Wausau area, Merrill and the whole state that have lost sons or daughters in combat throughout the history of the United States and their wars."

They hope to have funds raised by Veterans Day 2010 making this just the third gold star memorial in the country. While it will stand in Rothschild it will honor gold star mothers throughout the Midwest.

Maple says, "The first one is in New York and New Hampshire is doing fundraiser efforts for the 2nd one and so we will be the third one in which we would become the hub for the Midwest so this is Gold Star Mothers throughout the state of Wisconsin that we are trying to honor."

The pins cost $12.00 a piece. If you're interested in buying a pin or if you're an organization willing to sell pins, call Jessica Maple at 715-551-7206 or mail donations to Village of Rothschild at 211 Grand Ave Rothschild, WI 54474.
