Free Easter meal feeds hundreds

WAUSAU (WAOW)-- Volunteers at the Wausau Mine Company whipped up around 700 free dinners for those who needed a good meal and a place to enjoy it. It's the 21st annual Easter dinner at the restaurant and by now, they have the system down pat.

"You put a cookie, butter and a bun. Then you put a bean on. Then three pieces of ham. Then you set it up on the window," says Cook Charly Wichlac.

The cooks arrived bright and early this morning to put the food in the oven.

"We usually have potatoes, beans and the hams going before everyone comes in," explains, Wichlac. And it's a lot of food!

"275 pounds of ham, 300 pounds of potatoes, 3 cases of cookies, 6 cases of beans," says Kitchen Manager, Chester Fischer.

They served up meals for a sit down dinner as well as meals to go. "We ourselves delivered about 430 meals already!" says Fischer. For the volunteers, Easter is about serving others with a smile.

"Oh it's always fun! It's just fun. You see a lot of people here that have been here before. They look forward to it. So it gives us the motivation to get it going for them,"says Fischer.

"This is my third year and it's the best I've had," says patron, Dennis Peterson.
