Spencer School District seeks referendum

by Meg Bonacorsi

SPENCER (WAOW) -- Leaders in the Spencer School District are hoping taxpayers will help maintain the status quo through a referendum.

The superintendent says based on several public forums, that's what people in Spencer would like to see.

But he says the district can't afford to do that without a little help.

Mike Endreas says, "Basically what it comes down to is the amount of funding we're receiving from the state level isn't meeting our current expenditures.  Every year you have to heat the building, you have to maintain our facilities.  All those cost go up but the amount we're receiving from the state isn't matching that."

Combined, the proposed referendum would cost most taxpayers about $45 a year over the next three years.

The superintendent says rumors are swirling that some of that money would go towards a new gym.

He says, while a new facility would be nice, those rumors are not true.

Right now the district is dealing with needs, not wants.

Elections are on Tuesday.
