Wisconsin tea party members work with GOP

MADISON (AP) -- Despite trumpeting their independence from the political mainstream, Wisconsin tea party members are taking a different tack than those in other states by working hand-in-glove with GOP leaders.

A convention of tea party groups last month at a Wisconsin Dells resort could have doubled for an official Republican Party event as several GOP candidates prowled the halls seeking support.

Because both groups share a conservative ideology, the close association would seem to be a natural fit. But how well it actually works out remains to be seen, especially in an election year.

Tea party activists such as Nancy Milholland of Racine say they want the Republican Party to do more to cut taxes, spending and the size of government.
