Jordanian paper's April Fool's UFOs spark panic

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) -- The mayor of a town in Jordan says he was fooled by an April Fool's Day newspaper report. It said there'd bene a late-night visit by 10-foot-tall aliens in flying saucers.

The mayor says he sent security authorities in search of the aliens.

And he wasn't the only one who believed it. He says parents were keeping kids home from school, afraid that aliens would attack.

A Jordanian security official says an emergency plan was nearly enacted in the desert town about 185 miles from Amman.

The newspaper's managing editor says the goal was to entertain people, not frighten them.

The mayor had said he may sue, but he says the paper has called to apologize.
