WAUSAU (WAOW) -- April is Hmong History Month and some students in Wausau are celebrating in style.
Kids at Hawthorne Hills Elementary showed off their native Hmong clothing at a school-wide fashion show on Wednesday. They paraded the gym to traditional Hmong music, in the embroidery-embellished clothes.
The area is home to more than 6,000 Hmong, and the students say they're proud of their heritage.
"I had a kid say I love your clothes. I would love to have a pair just like yours," explained 4th grader Elkin Thao. "And I said thank you."
Marathon county has been home to a large Hmong community for more than 3 decades. Various cultural events are planned to celebrate Hmong History Month.
Northcentral Technical College is hosting a Hmong Shamen Forum for the public on April 13th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The school is also holding a forum on Hmong wedding traditions on 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
