October trial set for man in 7 Milwaukee killings

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The trial for a man accused of killing seven women over a 21-year period in Milwaukee has been pushed back until fall.

Walter Ellis has pleaded not guilty to first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree murder in the deaths of the women, who were killed between 1986 and 2007.

The trial had been scheduled to start May 3 but the 49-year-old was granted a new lawyer last month. His new lawyer, Alejandro (ahl-ay-HAHN-droh) Lockwood, asked Milwaukee County Judge Rebecca Dallet for a delay Friday and she set the trial for Oct. 4. Lockwood described the case as overwhelming and the biggest case he's ever handled. He says he also wants to make sure there's no conflict of interest with any of his past cases.
