Hoffman blows save in 9th as Brewers fall to Cards 5-4
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Pinch-hitter Nick Stavinoha's two-run homer off Trevor Hoffman with two outs in the ninth inning sent the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.
It was the first plate appearance of the season for Stavinoha, who made the opening-day roster out of spring training after being a midseason call-up for the Cardinals in each of the past two seasons.
And it was the first blown save of the year for Hoffman (0-1), baseball's career saves leader, after he converted his first two chances.
Ryan Franklin earned his second save of the season for St. Louis.
Until Stavinoha's big hit, Milwaukee's bullpen appeared to be cruising to another easy outing.
