STEVENS POINT (PRESS RELEASE) – The Pointers belted 21 hits and Melissa Wenig closed out game two with a walk-off grand slam as UW-Stevens Point swept the 2010 home opener against the Lions of Finlandia University 9-2 and 10-0.
The Pointers opened game one with a four run second inning and never looked back, tacking on one run in the third and two more in both the fifth and sixth to pull away for the seven run victory.
Lauren Watkins finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and Wenig finished game one with three hits and two runs scored. Michelle Jones picked up the win, throwing 6.1 innings of one hit ball, not allowing a run and striking out 12.
Tabitha Wilson suffered the loss in game one for the Lions, going the distance allowing 12 hits and walking two.
In game two, the Pointer offense cooled for the first three innings of game two before Katie Krueger opened the scoring with a solo home run in the fourth sparked three more Pointer runs in the inning, jumpstarting the offense.
The Pointers tacked on three more in the fifth, pushing the advantage to 6-0 heading into the sixth. In the sixth, with the bases full of Pointers, Wenig ended the game by the eight run rule, hitting a deep fly ball to left that cleared the fence for the grand slam.
Krueger finished the day 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Wenig, who played in game one and subbed in game two, was 2-for-2 in the second game with four RBI and two runs scored.
Chelsea Hensler, fresh off a no-hitter, allowed four hits and struck out six of the 22 batters faced, earning the victory.
The Pointers (13-5) return to action Saturday in their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for a Noon start.
