Early morning fire at a Wausau duplex under investigation

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Police are investigating the cause of an early morning fire that tore through a Wausau duplex.
Fire crews responded to a call at a duplex on the 800 block of McIntosh Street around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. They say the fire started in a second story bedroom. The person living upstairs was not home at the time. A couple living downstairs noticed the smoke and was able to get themselves and their pets out safely.
"We do have some moderate to extensive damage in the room of origin," explained Battalion Chief Doug Beula with the Wausau Fire Department. "There's also some heat and smoke damage throughout the structure. At this time, we're just trying to get to a cause."
The people living in the duplex are now getting help with other living arrangements through the Red Cross.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Battalion Chief says this is the third structure fire in 3 days in the Wausau area, but none of them seem suspicious.
