UW-Madison student fees would increase $108 per year for gym

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- University of Wisconsin-Madison students are voting this week on whether to raise student fees by $108 per year for a new state-of-the-art recreational center.

At issue is whether the university moves forward with a $62 million renovation of the Natatorium, which includes pools, gymnasiums, racquetball courts, weight rooms and other fitness equipment.

Student fees would increase by $54 per semester starting in 2013 for up to 30 years if the vote is successful. The referendum lasts Monday through Wednesday.

Supporters of the renovation say the building known as "the Nat" is aging and no longer has the features or size to meet the needs of UW-Madison students.

But critics, including the graduate student union, say now is not the time to increase student fees by that much.
