Landslide derails train in northern Italy, 11 dead

ROME (AP) -- A landslide has hit and derailed a train in northern Italy, killing 11 people and leaving more than 20 injured.

The ANSA news agency quotes local railway chief Helmuth Moroder as saying 11 people died in Monday's derailment near the city of Merano, about 300 kilometers (185 miles) north of Venice.

The landslide was caused by an irrigation pipe that burst open, sending rocks, debris and water down onto the oncoming train at around at 9:30 a.m. (0730GMT; 2:30 a.m. EDT).
