Doyle, lawmakers take new school reform approach

MADISON (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle and state lawmakers are pushing a new plan for dealing with the struggling Milwaukee schools that doesn't involve mayoral takeover but would give the state superintendent more authority to intervene.

The new plan announced Monday would require school boards to take a number of steps designed to improvement performance. The state superintendent could take additional steps, but only in consultation with the local superintendent and school board along with union leaders.

The idea includes pieces of proposals already introduced in the Legislature that have gone nowhere.

The new proposal was announced at a news conference in Milwaukee. The Legislature is expected to take up the plan before adjourning next week.
