DEVELOPING: Day 17 of Merrill Manufacturing strike

by Colby Robertson

MERRILL (WAOW) -- It has been 17 days since union members with Merrill Manufacturing walked off the job.

We'll have the latest on the strike coming up tonight on Newsline 9 at 5, 6 and 10. Other local union groups are joining in the strike to show support.

Guy LePage, Business Development Representative for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W Local 388) says, "They're out here for good reason. They're not negotiating in good faith with them. For a lot of these people this has been their job for 20 some years and they're being unfairly treated. It's good for us to come out and show our support with other trades."

The two sides began negotiating in November 2009 hoping to compromise on salary and benefit contracts.

But, the union's labor agreement expired in late December and these members have been working without a contract for more than three months.

Last week the President of Merrill Manufacturing, Patrick Taylor, sent out a news release saying, "We are working to remain in business and meet customer demands at all times, including during the strike. We remain hopeful that the work stoppage will end soon because it is important that we continue to work together with employees to ensure that the Company and community succeed during these difficult economic times."
