The entire town of Gays Mills begins moving out of flood plains

GAYS MILLS, Wis. (AP) -- The first apartment building on higher ground in Gays Mills should be ready for flood-weary residents in a matter of weeks.

The village is using a $4.3 million federal grant to develop the community outside the current flood plain.

Flooding in 2007 and 2008 devastated the village on the banks of the Kickapoo River. Village leaders decided last November to purchase 30 acres of high ground and build new homes and businesses.

The first apartment building is expected to open June 1. A second should open a month later.

WISC-TV reports that many of the new apartments are already leased and some lots have been sold for single-family houses.
