Rafters Sign Area Star To Inaugural Team

(WAOW) - The Rafters added another familiar name to many in the area today when they announced the signing of pitcher/outfielder Cody Koback (UW-Stevens Point), a native of nearby Plover, WI. The club has also signed UC-Riverside sophomore infielder Trent Jemmett to a 2010 contract.

Koback is currently competing in his second season as a member of the UW-Stevens Point baseball team.  While seeing action as both an outfielder and pitcher, Koback has excelled 18 games into the spring season. In his first start on the mound this spring, Koback tossed 5 shutout innings while scattering 5 hits and striking out 3 against Bowdoin College. He has been equally impressive at the plate where he has appeared in 8 games, while starting in 6, and has posted a .263 batting average with a .391 OBP.

As a freshman last season, Koback played in 37 games while making 35 starts. He batted .313 with 39 runs scored, four triples, six home runs, and 10 stolen bases in a season which saw the Pointers post a 31-16 overall record. Offensively Koback produced many highlights which included a 6 game hitting streak that started during the WIAC Tournament and lasted through the NCAA Tournament. He also hit for the cycle in a victory at UW-La Crosse while tallying five RBI and scoring 3 runs.  His 16 multi-hit games were a telling sign of his consistency at the plate for the Pointers in 2009.  On the mound Koback tossed 24.2 innings while posting a stifling 2.55 ERA and logging 20 strikeouts.  In his only start of the season he received the win, pitching 5.1 innings while allowing four hits and two earned runs.

A native of Plover, WI, Cody was a member of the 2007 Plover American Legion state championship team.  He was a two-time first team all-state selection in both 2007 and 2008 while also being awarded the Wisconsin Valley Conference player of the year honors in those same seasons.

Jemmett, a sophomore infielder, has proven to be a spark for the UC-Riverside baseball team this spring.  Appearing in 15 games and making 9 starts, Jemmett carries a .278 batting average into the Highlanders matchup today versus UCLA. Last season, Jemmett appeared in 20 games for UC-Riverside, while making 3 starts.

A San Diego, California native, Jemmett was a three year letter winner while attending La Jolla High School.  He led the Vikings to the second round of the playoffs in 2007 and the quarterfinals in 2008.  As a senior he was named to the CIF Second-Team in 2008 and was a CIF First-Team selection in 2007.  Jemmett is majoring in business at UC-Riverside.
