Wausau Council approves funding for sports authority

WAUSAU (WAOW) - A regional sports authority will receive half percent funding on tax room dollars from Wausau.  The City Council approves the distribution at its meeting Tuesday night.

The money will be used by the Wausau/Central Wisconsin Convention and Visitors Bureau to promote sporting events in the Wausau area.  The CVB will receive three percent total.

The CVB represents 7 municipalities.  Kronenwetter is the only one of the seven that does not collect hotel room tax.  Wausau falls in line with Mosinee, Weston and Schofield as contributing hotel tax money to the sports authority.  The remaining municipalities are Rothschild and Rib Mountain.

The funding will start in the third quarter of 2010 and will continue for a year and a half.  Then it will be reevaluated.

The money is part of the more than $605,000 in room tax money dedicated to Wausau's groups or events.

Other requests, such as the Wausau Kayak and Canoe Corporation, Balloon Rally, Market Place Thursdays, Jaycees Fourth of July and Wausau Dance Theater will receive less money in 2010 than 2009.

Three percent of hotel tax money was earmarked for the CVB when it promoted the Badger State Games.  It would have returned to 2 1/2 percent without the sports authority approval.

The CVB returned $13,000 to the city in leftover collections following this year's Badger State Games.
