STEVENS POINT (PRESS RELEASE) – The UW-Stevens Point softball team was able to end St. Norbert's twelve game winning streak by taking game one of the doubleheader 6-5 but the Green Knights came back in game two and snapped the Pointers eleven game winning streak as they fell 4-6 at McCarty Memorial Field on Tuesday afternoon.
In the first game of the doubleheader both teams were held scoreless until the Pointers broke the tie with a single from Kimberly Liegel after a Sarah Butts double to left field. Liegel was able to score on the next play as Lauren Watkins lined her fourth triple of the season to right field, putting Point up 2-0.
The Green Knights were able to answer with two runs of their own in the top half of the fourth inning with the benefit of two Pointer errors. Collette Ullmer was able to come around on a Jessica Berger error and Kristen Zimmerman was able to score on a base hit by Brittany Narges to even the game at 2-2.
The Pointers then answered to St. Norbert in their half of the fourth, started off by a double from Elyse Nelson. Bryanna Tremello then pinch-ran for Nelson and was knocked in on a single to left from Megan Tracy. Katie Krueger added on one more run in the inning when she lined a pinch-hit double to right field to give Point a 4-2 lead after four.
In the fifth the Green Knights were able to take advantage of another Pointers error as Kayla Krueger scored on a single by Brieanne Oehlke.
Point added on two more runs as Nelson came up to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning and connected on her first home run of the season. Katie Shulfer drew a walk next and later scored the sixth run for the Pointers putting them up 6-3 heading into the final frame.
St. Norbert led off the inning with a runner thanks to the Pointers sixth error of the game. Ullmer drove in her second run of the game and scored on a Narges single to bring the Green Knights within one. Michelle Jones was able to get the next batter Tracy Palmer to ground out to third base, giving the Pointers a 6-5 victory.
Jones improved her record to 8-3 on the season while allowing no earned runs on eleven hits. The Green Knights Kayla Krueger came into the game with an 8-0 record but she suffered her first loss giving up four earned runs in four innings of work.
Liegel led the Pointers with three singles and Nelson added a double and a home run of her own.
St. Norbert was led by Palmer who singled three times to left field with Ullmer also finding left field twice. Narges also added two singles.
In the second game the Green Knights got on the board in the top of the second as Narges doubled and later scored on a Zimmerman ground out. Shulfer was able even up the score in Points half of the second as she drove in Berger with a two out single.
Point was then able to pull ahead in the fourth as Berger led off the inning with a double and two batters later a single by Tracy scored her. Shulfer and another punch-hit single by Krueger platted two more runs giving Point a 4-1 advantage after four.
The Pointers defense struggled in the fifth as they committed three errors allowing the Green Knights to tie the game at four. Stephanie Ortiz knocked in two runs with a double and Krueger knocked her in with a run scoring triple to centerfield.
In the top half of the seventh the Green Knights once again took advantage of a Pointer error as they committed their fourth of game two and tenth on the day. Alissa Purko scored the first run of the inning and Ortiz was later knocked in with a sacrifice fly from Oehlke, giving the Green Knights a two run advantage into the final half inning of play.
The Pointers managed to put runners on first and second with two outs and leading run Nelson at the plate but she popped out to end the game with a final of 6-4 in favor of the Green Knights.
Kari Corbeille improved her record to 5-3 pitching seven innings, scattering nine hits and allowing four runs for St Norbert. Point's Chelsea Hensler fell to 6-1 as she gave up six runs in seven innings of work.
Berger and Shulfer reached base three times in the second game and Shulfer also drove in two runs. Ortiz had three hits and two RBIs for the Green Knights while Krueger added a single and a triple.
UW-Stevens Point (16-6, 2-0 WIAC) will travel to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday to face off in a doubleheader against the Warhawks in a conference matchup. Game one is scheduled to begin a 3 p.m.
