MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Marquette says it's signed junior college player of the year Jae Crowder to a National Letter of Intent.
Head coach Buzz Williams made the announcement Wednesday morning and says he's excited about adding Crowder, who will fit a need on their team.
Marquette forward Lazar Hayward, who led the team last season with 18.1 points per game, graduated. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound Crowder will have two years of eligibility for the Golden Eagles. The two are similar in size and style.
Crowder averaged 18.9 points on his way to being named the 2009-10 NJCAA Division I Player of the Year and helped Howard College to its first title in men's basketball.
Previously, Crowder played at South Georgia Tech Junior College and was a prep star in Villa Rica, Ga.
Marquette has also signed Devonte "DJ" Newbill to a national letter of intent.
Newbill is a 6-foot-4 guard who was the Pennsylvania Class AA player of the year at Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion High School. Newbill scored 64 points in a game this past season to set his school's single-game scoring record. He averaged 24.2 points his senior year.
