Wausau Superintendent Steve Murley a finalist for Iowa City job

IOWA CITY (WAOW)--Wausau School District Superintendent Steve Murley is a finalist for the Iowa City School District Superintendent in the Hawkeye State.

Murley, along with 2 other candidates, are scheduled to be in Iowa next week between Tuesday and Thursday to tour the district, meet with people and attend a public forum. The board will interview each candidate in open session.

Over the last year, Murley faced heavy criticism from the Wausau teachers union. In December, they asked the Wausau School Board to terminate him, citing "a lack of leadership."

However, school board members stood by Murley, saying he's done a good job for the district. Murley was rated proficient in his annual evaluation for 2009.

Iowa City School District Board members are expected to make a decision on April 25th.

The current Iowa City superintendent, Lane Plugge, will resign on June 30 after 11 years with the district.

Murley was not available to comment.
