Juneau County man pleads guilty to fatally bludgeoning wife

JUNEAU (AP) -- A jury will determine whether a Waupun man was mentally ill when he bludgeoned his wife to death in their Waupun apartment last summer.

47-year-old Larry Henry pleaded guilty last week to a charge of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of Tammy Henry.

The plea was the first part of a two-phased trial. Henry had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity on Oct. 7. That meant a first phase would have to establish whether he killed Tammy Henry as charged, and the other would determine whether he was mentally competent at the time.

The guilty plea covers the first phase. Now jurors will be asked to decide the other.

Prosecutors say Larry Henry called a dispatcher in July 2009 and calmly said he had killed his wife.
