Layoff notices sent to 2,000 Detroit teachers

DETROIT (AP) -- About 2,000 Detroit Public Schools teachers have received layoff notices as the district's financial manager continues to pare down a $219 million budget deficit.

Steve Wasko, a spokesman for Robert Bobb, confirms Tuesday that notices have been mailed but says many teachers likely will be returned to work.

The Associated Press left a message seeking comment from the president of the 5,000-teacher union.

Bobb announced last month that he would close more than 40 schools in June. The school board sued, claiming he has no authority over academics.

A judge on Friday ruled to temporarily stop Bobb from making academic plans without consulting the school board.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox has said he will appeal the judge's ruling.
