Unemployment rises in 6 Wisconsin metro areas

MADISON (AP) -- Unemployment is up in six Wisconsin metropolitan areas and down in two.

The state Department of Workforce Development on Wednesday reported local unemployment figures for March.

Unemployment rates rose in the Appleton, La Crosse, Oshkosh, Sheboygan, Madison and Milwaukee areas from February. Rates dropped in the Eau Claire, Fond du Lac and Wausau areas. They were unchanged in the Green Bay, Racine and Janesville areas.

The Janesville area had the highest unemployment rate of any metro area at 12.8 percent, which was down from a year ago when it was 13.7 percent.

Madison had the lowest at 7 percent.

Beloit had the highest unemployment of any city at 18.2 percent. Statewide adjusted unemployment was 8.8 percent.
