WAUSAU (WAOW)--USA's top paddlers hit the Wisconsin River in hopes of earning a spot on the National Team. Around 55 athletes competed at White Water Park in Wausau for The USA National Slalom Team. Finalists will compete in the International Canoe Federation 2010 World Cup in Prague. The top three paddlers in each class secure a place on the team. The fourth place finisher earns an alternate position.
Hailey Thompson, 16, took to the waters finishing first in Senior Women's Canoe. The Stevens Point native prepares year round for the trials. "I live on the Plover River which is just outside of Stevens Point and I train their everyday. My parents coach me and in the Winter I do Nordic Skiing for Cross Training," says Thompson. She heads to Europe for the worldwide competition in June.
