Hotel, jersey taxes key to Vikings stadium plan

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The newest financing plan for a Minnesota Vikings stadium relies on taxes from hotel stays, car rentals and jersey purchases.

Those taxes combined with a sports-themed lottery game would be the public contribution to a $791 million stadium. The plan was outlined Monday by Minnesota legislators sponsoring the bill.

The taxes would pay almost $32 million in annual debt over the next 40 years. The plan calls for the Vikings to kick in one-third of the cost -- $264 million.

There are two weeks remaining in the 2010 session, a late start for any proposal and especially one with such high visibility.

Democratic Rep. Loren Solberg, the chief House sponsor, says the bill won't be given a final vote until a budget deficit is addressed.
