Power of the traveling purse

WESTON (WAOW) -- An event called Power of the Traveling Purse helped area women give a little and get a little.

It's essentially a shopping extravaganza that features purses from all over the world.

The event is put on by the United Way's Women In Action Group.

Proceeds go toward Marathon County's Project Step Up. It's a program that helps needy families learn more about financial responsibility.

Director Rebecca Morris says, "We have 5 modules currently that families are required to participate in. We start with basic budgeting, we go to basic banking, basic credit, basic consumer skills and then we go to the final program which talks about long term financial planning."

Kristi Parrott signed up for Project Step Up about a year ago.  She's a single mother of 3 and has seen significant results since becoming a part of the program.

She says, "There's more money I can set aside for savings. And about two weeks ago the car broke down so I actually had money in the bank to fix the car, where a year ago if the car would have broken down, I would have been at a loss."

People like Kristi are also paired up with mentors to get one-on-one advice when it comes to financial literacy.

If you or someone you know would like to sign up for the program visit www.projectstepup.org
