School board moves forward with superintendent search

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- The Wausau School Board comes to an agreement as to how it will replace superintendent Steve Murley.

The board is faced with a big time constraint. Ideally they would like to fill the position by July 1st when superintendent Murley heads to Iowa.

Ultimately they decided to create an Ad Hoc search committee to begin looking for a consulting firm. At the same time they will begin looking for an interim superintendent.

The board discussed five different options at it's meeting tonight:

  • Board appoints successor without a search
  • Board conducts search on their own
  • Board hires firm to conduct a search
  • Board appoints an interim for 2010-2011
  • Board exercises option 4 in conjunction with options 1, 2, or 3 with the successor to begin duties on July 1, 2011.

The nine member board agreed 60 days was too short of a time for anyone to find a quality candidate to replace Superintendent Murley.

Instead, the Ad Hoc Search Committee will begin to research firms across the country. The following board members were nominated to lead the search committee: Mike Hartkopf, Keith Montgomery, Patrick Keefe, Jane Rusch and Michelle Schaefer.

They will meet again in the next couple of days and bring recommendations to the board. The cost of hiring a firm to conduct a search is between $15,000-$30,000.

In the meantime, the board has asked Superintendent Murley to present them with a list of potential interim superintendents. He will recommend a list of candidates to the board next Monday.
