Arrest made in Times Square bomb plot

NEW YORK (ABC)-- It only took police 36 hours to get their man, a native of Pakistan but a naturalized American citizen.  Thirty year-old Faisal Shahzad was arrested Monday night after agents from the Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection moved in.

U.S. Attorney General Anthony Holder says, "Mr. Shahzad, an American citizen, was taken into custody at JFK Airport in New York as he attempted to board a flight to Dubai."

According to police, less than two weeks ago, Shahzad purchased a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder that was found smoking in the middle of Times Square Saturday night.  The SUV contained a car bomb made of gasoline, propane, fireworks and fertilizer.

After being tipped off by street vendor, police immediately cleared the dozens of blocks in the Times Square area, packed with tens of thousands of theater-goers and tourists.

Holder says, "The vehicle in Times Square was first noticed on Saturday by a citizen who reported it to authorities, and, as always, any American who notices suspicious activity should report it to the appropriate law enforcement agencies."

As he rode the subway to work Monday morning, New York's Mayor also encouraged Americans to be vigilant.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says, "In the end there's no magic secret to this.  In this case, were we lucky? Yes we were lucky."

A video posted on line early Sunday morning after the attempted bombing claims responsibility on behalf of the Taliban in Pakistan.  The site was registered one day before the attack and federal law enforcement officials say the persons who posted the video lived in Connecticut and are also being sought.

Holder says, "We continue to pursue a number of leads.  But it's clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans.

Officials say the most important leads came from the vehicle itself and its unexploded bomb parts.
