Ernest E. Szews, 83, Hatley, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in route to Saint Clare's Hospital, Weston.
He was born May 5, 1926 in the town of Norrie, the son of the late Max and Regina (Bender) Szews. On June 8, 1952, Ernest was united in marriage to Mary Jane Steinke at St. Florian's Catholic Church, Hatley. She survives.
Ernest was a US Army Veteran and was honorably discharged in 1951. He was a member of the Hatley American Legion Post #471 for 54 years. Ernest was an over the road truck driver for several companies for 40 years. He retired from James River Corporation with 25 years of accident free driving. He was a member of St. Florian's Catholic Church where he was a parish usher. Ernest was the last surviving graduate of his class from Elderon School. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, logging, hunting, fishing and listening to the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers. He was known to sneak a few treats to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always enjoyed attending the Szews Family Reunion at Elderon Park.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Szews, Hatley, five children; Judy (Richard) Popp, Penny (Terry) Esker, Joe Szews, Randy (Carri) Szews and Bill (Madonna) Szews, all of Hatley, 12 Grandchildren; Chad, Andy and Lindsey Popp, Jeremy (Danielle) Esker, Jody (Alicia) Esker, Jennifer (Duane) Gruna, Jacqui Esker, Angie Szews, Max Szews, Courtney Szews, Alex Szews and Will Szews, six Great-Grandchildren; Gavin, Gwyneth, Cody, Wyatt and Mariyah Esker and Brady Gruna, six brothers and sisters; Rupert (Jean) Szews, Hatley, Irene (Bernie) Schaefer, Colgate, Lawrence (Gertie) Szews, Elderon, Joyce (Don) Zenz, New Berlin, Jim (Henrietta) Szews, Hatley and Ron (Jan) Szews, Plymouth, Minnesota and family friend Charles ‘Dino' Puccio and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by his sister Lorraine (Leo) Schwab.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Friday, April 30, 2010 at St. Florian's Catholic Church, Hatley. Fr. George Szews will officiate. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion. Visitation will be on Friday from 9:00 am until the time of services all at the church.
