DEVELOPING: Beer fence controversy

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- A beer fence is at the center of controversy in Wausau.

At 6:00 Tuesday evening, Wausau city leaders will meet to decide whether or not they will require a fence at this weekends SquareUp Brew Fest.

The SquareUp committee organized this 'Brew Fest' months ago as a fundraiser for the 400 block renovations.

Red Eye Brewery, Great Dane and Bull Falls all brewed special beer to help raise money for the new 400 block.

But, a city ordinance says if you're going to sell alcohol, you have to have an enclosure unless you get a waiver and have an alcohol control plan. For example, wristbands have been used for some past events.

Last month, the Public Health and Safety Committee unanimously voted against granting a waiver after police opposed that plan.

Tonight, the committee called a special meeting to re-vote on whether or not they will allow a waiver in this instance.

Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel says he plans to speak at the meeting in favor of a fence. We will also hear from those against having this beer fence around the 400 block Saturday.

Newsline 9's Colby Robertson will be at the meeting and bring you the latest tonight on Newsline 9 at 10.
