WAUSAU (WAOW) - Obey's retirement creates an opening the republicans would love to fill.

Marathon County's Republican chairman calls this a great day to be part of the 7th district.

John Yackel points to the very things Obey hangs his hat on, the health care bill, the economic stimulus package, as bad for our country.

Yackel believes the Republicans finally have a strong challenger in Sean Duffy, who would be successful with or without Obey in the race.

John Yackel: "I think Dave Obey has come to that realization. He woke up sometime the last couple of weeks and come to realize the handwriting was on the wall. And rather than making one last stand and facing the voters that' he's represented the last 40 years, he's turned tail and called it quits."

Yackel says Obey believed in big government spending and the stimulus never jumpstarted the economy.

The Marathon County Republican chair says Duffy would bring financial responsibility back to Washington D.C.

Dan Mielke is also running for the soon-to-be open 7th congressional seat.
