Obey's impact on higher education

by Colby Robertson

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Dave Obey has always been a friend of education and in particular higher education. He's used his power in Washington to help bring federal funding and scholarships to improve education right here in Central Wisconsin.

Obey's roots are right here in Wausau and over the years he's worked diligently to make sure higher education thrives in this community. The congressman has a passion for education and as a UW Marathon County alum his roots have always brought him back to the campus that gave him his start.

At a UWMC groundbreaking event in August 2009 Obey says, "This is a wonderful educational institution near and dear to my heart and Joan's"

The UW Center for Civic Engagement is Obey's most recent contribution helping UW Marathon County secure more than $2.5 million in federal grants.

UWMC Dean Sandy Smith says, "He's been a wonderful supporter and wonderful advocate for higher education for us it's going to be a huge loss in Washington."

His presence felt all over Wausau helping NTC's administration secure federal funds for the David R. Obey Center for Health Sciences.

Smith says, "We see his footprint everywhere in this community."

As chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Obey has used his power and influence in Washington to help NTC and UWMC grow into the schools they are today.

It's that presence that Dean Smith says will be missed throughout the Wausau Community.

Smith says, "Without him in Washington it's going to change our positioning, what we're able to access, the funding we're able to secure without his pull and persuasion there."
