LA CROSSE - Less than a year ago, Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball coach Chris Schwarz received word that his program built on the bluffs of the Mississippi River town would be cut.
Recruiting all but stopped. Schwarz told his players that the coaching staff would do everything they could to help the kids find a place to play.
Turns out that place was La Crosse all along.
Needing immediate cash just for one season and $175,000 to keep the program alive, they got both, thanks to an anonymous donor who came through with a gift potentially worth six figures.
The money assures that La Crosse will be around not just for another season, but at least for five with the infrastructure in place to keep the program going perpetually.
