Pointer baseball team sweeps away Stout on Saturday afternoon

MENOMONIE (PRESS RELEASE)- Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay) pitched a complete game shutout, his second consecutive complete game, and three Pointers went deep in game two as the Pointers completed a Saturday sweep of the UW-Stout Blue Devils at Nelson Field. Point took game one 10-8 and roughed up Stout in game two, winning 10-0 in eight innings.

In the first of two, both teams were held scoreless until the Pointer half of the fourth. Sam Spurney (Manitowoc) started the scoring as he doubled to center, scoring Justin Jirschele (Clintonville), for a 1-0 lead. Brad Archambeau (Watertown) stepped up to the plate next and knocked a single to left field, plating Spurney, giving Pont a 2-0 advantage.

Point was able to add to their two run lead in the top of the fifth, where the strung together four hits and tallied four runs. After an Eric Fritz (Custer) single and a Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) walk, Jirschele poked a two run double to right-center field to score both. Spurney then followed up with his second double of the game, platting Jirschele. Archambeau also added another RBI single, pushing Point's lead to 6-0 after four and a half complete.

Fritz kept the Pointers rolling in the sixth when his double down the left field line plated the seventh run of the game. Point pushed across three more runs in the inning on an infield single by Jirschele, a pinch-hit double by Jared Surman (Kimberly) and a fly out by Spurney for a 10 run advantage.

UW-Stout was finally able to plate a pair of runs in their half of the sixth when AJ Yusten took Pointers starter Tyler Lorenz (Pembine) deep for a two run home run.

Down 2-10, the Blue Devils waited until the bottom of the ninth to put together their final rally attempt of the game. Stout put the first two batters of the inning on against Cam Seidl (Appleton) and Jesse Brockman drove both runners home on a double to center field. Ryan Gilbertson and Jake Duske were then able to coax back-to-back walks, loading the bases for Yusten. The Blue Devils designated hitter stepped up and belted his second home run of the game, a grand slam, cutting the Pointers lead to just two. Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire) then came on to record the final out of the game as he struck out Adam Stuessel to preserve the 10-8 victory for the Pointers.

Lorenz improved to 5-4 on the season after going seven innings, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits. Iverson picked up his second save of the season.

Nate Hanson suffered the loss and seen his record fall to 4-5 after allowing 10 runs, six earned, on 15 Pointer hits.

Spurney led the Pointers going a perfect four-for-four with two double and three RBIs. Fritz and Jirschele contributed three hits, including each with a double, and Jirschele also had three RBIs. Dan Douglas (East Troy) and Archambeau also contributed to Point's 15 hit outburst with two apiece.

Five of the Blue Devils in the lineup had two hit games and were led by Yusten's two home runs and six RBIs.

In the nightcap, the Pointers were able to strike first as Richter connected on a two out solo home run, his eighth one of the season, in the top of the first. Spurney added the Pointers second run of the game in the fourth on his fifth long ball of the season to put Point up 2-0.

Fritz was able to build on the lead in the top of the fifth when he singled up the middle, platting Josh Krueger (Portage) and Surman. The Pointers added two more runs in the seventh on consecutive two out hits, a single by Kevin Thomas and a triple by Archambeau, pushing the lead to 6-0.

In the top half of the eighth, the Pointers put the first two runners on to chase Blue Devils starter Russ Jiskra from the contest. After new hurler Dan Britts retired the first two batters he faced, Surman was hit by a pitch to load up the bases for Krueger. Krueger took Britts' offering and sent it over the center field fence for a grand slam, once again giving the Pointers a 10-0 lead.

Facing the 10 run rule, Delorit continued his domination of the Blue Devils, sitting the down in order in the bottom of the eighth to complete the doubleheader over UW-Stout.

Delorit (6-3) continued his recent domination as of late as he pitched a two hit complete game shutout, striking out 11 and walking one and retired the side in order in five out of eight innings. This marks the second consecutive complete game Delorit has thrown and in his last three outings, and in those games he has thrown 24 innings, allowing two earned runs on 16 hits while striking out 27 batters.

Jiskra suffered the loss, dropping to 1-2 on the season, after allowing eight runs, seven earned in seving innings of work.

Archambeau and Richter were the only Pointers with multi-hit games with two each. Richter, Spurney and Krueger all added home runs in the second game. Krueger's blast was his sixth of the season in just 32 at bats.

Brian Giebel and Chris Sill were the only Blue Devils with hits in game two.

The Pointers committed a season-high six errors last time out against Lawrence University but cleaned up the defense on Saturday as they had just one error is the two games combined.

UW-Stevens Point (26-11, 13-7 WIAC) will take on UW-Stout again tomorrow in another doubleheader as they wrap-up the regular season portion of their schedule. First pitch is set for Noon.
