Doyle calls for federal disaster aid for ginseng farmers

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- Governor Doyle is calling for federal disaster aid to help the ginseng farmers in Marathon County.

The unexpected May snow storm and cold temperatures have devastated local crops.

Governor Doyle says he took the first step asking the federal Department of Agriculture Secretary to send help. The aid would give ginseng farmers access to low interest loans and insurance recovery for the loss.

Governor Jim Doyle says, "Ginseng is a very very sensitive crop. It's 1-3 years. It's a huge investment that Ginseng farmers make in that crop and so we're very hopeful the U.S. Department of Agriculture will recognize the harm and help those farmers out."

Doyle says the state Department of Agriculture is monitoring the ginseng farmers very closely. They don't know the full extent of the damage yet, but he says there is clearly a significant loss.
