STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -- Volunteers certainly make their mark on Central Wisconsin. At Newsline 9, we're proud to join in an effort to recognize some of them. Over the course of a year you'll meet a dozen people honored with a Jefferson Award.
Established in 1972 it recognizes businesses, schools and individuals who answer the call to action for volunteers. This months winner is Janet Glodowski.
Every December the Smokey Express Christmas Show takes over the Amherst community. It's not your typical Christmas concert, but instead a fun, family oriented way to celebrate the holidays and give back to those less fortunate.
The organizer, director and head honcho of it all is Janet Glodowski.
Glodowski says, "I just have always believed family is very very important and our family is blessed with musical talents and when this started, I just had the idea to do a concert."
Over the past 18 years, the Smokey Express Christmas Show has raised $114,000. Money that's all ended up back in the Portage County Community divided up among organizations important to the Glodowski family. One in particular, the ALS Foundation.
Glodowski says, "My dad was a musician in a band his whole life and that got us going and so then when he got ALS we took on the drive to support it."
Glodowski said she'd do the Christmas Show until she raised a hundred thousand dollars. That goal was achieved after last years show raised $16,000.
Nominator and friend Sharyn Kedrowski says, "When she said this past year was going to be the last show, we all went okay, but there was a really big hole in our hearts and thank god the community came out and said you can't stop."
She's touched so many lives not only in Amherst, but throughout Portage County. Nominated by friend Sharyn Kedrowski, Janet as earned Newsline 9's June Jefferson Award.
Glodowski says, "I feel humbled because I'm an organizer and I think I do a lot of the organizing but I have a lot of people do all the stuff, so I'm not the only one who deserves this."
Congratulations to Janet. She and all our winners will be eligible to move on to the national competition. Newsline 9 Jefferson Awards are presented by Marshfield Clinic.
