Wisconsin Rapids, WI – June 4, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE)- For the second straight night the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters put the go-ahead run on base in the top of the ninth inning, but could not pick up a clutch hit and dropped their third straight, 3-2 to the Eau Claire Express.
Trailing 3-1 since the sixth, Matt Cornwell sparked a promising rally by reaching on an error. After a fly-out, Brian Embery singled moving Cornwell to second. A fly out and a hit batter later, Craig Shul stood in with the bases loaded. Shul turned in a quality at bat, worked a walk and brought the Rafters within one, setting the game on the shoulders of Dan Olinger with two out.
"Your approach at the plate shouldn't change, no matter the situation," a disappointed Olinger said. "But I did know he'd been wild so I was going to make him throw me two strikes. He actually gave me a pretty good pitch to hit."
Olinger punched a high hopper over the mound that appeared to be headed for no man's land. Instead, second baseman Drew Heithoff made an outstanding grab and throw to beat Olinger to the bag.
George Lott turned in an excellent outing in his starting debut, throwing five innings allowing just a run on two hits, striking out six. Brad Douthit struggled, giving up two runs in an inning and one third, but induced a key double play to limit the damage.
With the loss the Rafters drop to 0-3, while the Express move to 2-1. The Rafters get another shot in Eau Claire Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 with Chris Green scheduled to make his second start of the season.
