WAKE UP WISCONSIN (WAOW)-- With all the rainfall that we're dealing with, it raises the risk for West Nile. Dolores joined us on the show to talk about the virus.

Q.  Can West Nile cause illness in dogs & cast?

A.  According to the CDC – relatively small number of infected pets have been reported. Experimentally infected dogs showed no symptoms. Cats did show mild symptoms of slight fever and slight lethargy.  Cats systems are more delicate than dogs.

Q.  How do dogs and cats become infected?

A.  By being bitten by a mosquito. There is also evidence of cats becoming infected after eating  experimentally infected mice.

Q.  What precautions should we take?

A.  Eliminate all standing water around the outside of your home. Peak mosquito biting time is early morning and evening. Weather permits wear long sleeve shirts, long pants and socks. Should you find a dead bird---report this to the DNR – this is important in monitoring the virus

Q.  Is there a vaccine for my cat or dog?

A.  No, however there is a vaccine for horses.
