WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - Jake Kubisiak made the most of his second straight trip to the division three state golf meet, battling through wind and rain to become the second straight Assumption golfer to earn a top five finish at the state finals.
After Jake Kubisiak finished twenty second at last year's state tournament, the Assumption golfer turned his attention to his senior year and improving on his finals finish. That offseason work paid off when Kubisiak closed his career with a fourth place finish in last week's state golf meet.
"I was pretty happy. I didn't expect that I'd be able to pull off a top-10 finish, but I ended up being in the top five and I was very pleased about that," Kubisiak said."
Kubisiak's round of 18 over par was far from the typical score for a top five finish, but because of rainy and windy conditions, he was one of only 10 golfers to break 80 in either round.
"The conditions were just horrible," said Assumption assistant coach John Steinberg. "He played in rain, pouring rain and when the rain stopped the winds came up. He hung in there and that's a great accomplishment."
"On the second day I was not expecting 18-over would be a good score," Kubisiak said. "Once I got in the clubhouse and saw all the other scores were just as high as mine if not higher I was actually somewhat surprised and somewhat happy at the same time."
Since the beginning of his junior season, Kubisiak has shaved more than 10 strokes off his average, something he hopes leaves an impact with his younger teammates.
"It helped me get to state, so hopefully that will help the other guys work a little bit harder and they can shave some more strokes off their games and maybe they'll be able to get to state next year as well."
