Madison, WI June 19, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE)- Jenzen Torres homered in the first inning to put the Rafters up 1-0, but three Madison runs in the bottom of the first had the Rafters playing catch-up all night. Solo home runs from Brian Embery and Ryan Palermo only dented the lead as the Rafters fell 10-6 to the Mallards Saturday night.
A 35 pitch first inning halted Matt Baudino's third start before it got off the ground. The lefty allowed three runs in the bottom of the first on three hits and three walks. Each of the four Rafters relievers allowed at least a run. Jesse Arreola allowed one over two innings, Dan Johnson allowed three over an inning and one third, Brad Douthit allowed a run over two and two thirds and Tommy Organ allowed two runs in his one inning of work.
Helped by the long ball, the Rafters kept things interesting with five runs over the final three innings. Palermo hit his home run in the seventh, and then in the eighth Michael Smith blasted a two out double to right center to plate another run.
The real drama came in the ninth. Brian Embery hit an opposite field homer to left to start the scoring. A walk, fielder's choice and ground out had the rafters down to their final out. Down to his final strike, Evan Laude singled home Cody Koback, starting a string of three straight singles. When the dust settled runners stood on the corners and the Rafters trailed 10-6. But the Madison shortstop snared Smith's bounding ball up the middle and stepped on the bag to end the Rafters late charge.
Matt Baudino falls to 0-3 with the loss. Mallards starter Matt Morgan moves to 1-0 after seven innings of two run ball. The loss drops the Rafters to 5-10 while the win moves the Mallards to 7-9.
The Rafters and Mallards square off at Witter Field for an afternoon game Sunday. Celebrate Fathers Day with the Rafters at 1:05, the first 500 will receive a free baseball they can use to play catch with the dad on the field after the game.
