WAKE UP WISCONSIN (WAOW)-- Spring and summer are active moving times for people, and finding a rental place that accepts pets is not always easy.

Q.  What are some reasons some rentals don"t accept pets?

A.  Owners may have had bad experiences with previous irresponsible pet owners, not cleaning up after their pets, leaving damaged apartments.

Q. What are some of the steps one should take to look for acceptable rentals?

A.  Contact local Humane Societies—sometimes they have a list of pet friendly housing.

     Check with a local realtor

Check housing guide books, found in markets

 Q.  What should a pet owner bring to the owner?

A.  Have proof that you are responsible. A letter of reference from current landlord. Documentation that your pet has been spayed/neutered, is up to date on all vaccinations, proof that your dog has completed a training class.

Be honest—don't sneak your pet in. You may be in violation of your lease and run the risk of being evicted. Thus also ruining the reputation of future pet owners. Be a responsible owner both for yourself and for other pet owners.
