Wausau, WI - The Wisconsin Woodchucks topped the Battle Creek Bombers 8-3 Thursday, and maintained their lead atop the south division. The ‘Chucks move to 14-8.
Picking up the Win for the ‘Chucks was Nick Capito (1-0), who made his first appearance as a Woodchuck. Capito went more than six innings in his debut, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three. Jayson McClaren continued his absolutely dominant season, picking up the three inning save while allowing only one baserunner.
The Woodchucks posted a four-spot in the bottom of the first, and although it was enough to clinch the win, they would tack on four more runs over the course of the game. Battle Creek starter Nate Blankemeyer would see eight runs come across the plate whilst on the mound, five of which were earned.
While sloppy Bombers' defense helped augment the ‘Chucks run totals, Brock Stassi and Sharif Othman each chipped in two RBI. Stassi mashed a two run jack in the first inning, and Othman singled in a run in both the fourth and seventh frames.
Following the win, the ‘Chucks have now won seven of their last eight games. Eau Claire and La Crosse, both half a game back to start the day, lost their respective outings. The Woodchucks now sit one-and-a-half games ahead of the Express and Loggers, going into a three game road trip at La Crosse this weekend. The ‘Chucks will return home on Tuesday to begin a home-away-home series with the Madison Mallards.
