Wisconsin Rapids - Matt Baudino would simply not allow a fourth straight loss on his record. A loser in his first three, Baudino fought his way in and out of trouble, before finishing the night with six innings of no run, three hit baseball and a 1-0 win over Lacrosse.
With a little help from his friends and just enough offense, Baudino moves to 1-3 on the season. "I really didn't do a lot differently. I just focused on keeping the hitters off balance," Baudino said. "There were some huge plays on defense to help me out of tough spots and you can't put a price on that."
The offense sparked just once in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Rafters. After the home plate umpire ejected manager Scott Laverty in the top of the inning, the Rafters responded with a two out run. Matt Johnson doubled, and then Jenzen Torres bounced a two hopper to the first baseman. But the throw to first pulled the pitcher off the bag and Johnson scored the game's only run. Loggers Starter Tony Mueller allowed just that single unearned run and struck out 11 through eight innings.
After Baudino's stellar performance, double barrel action out of the bullpen sealed the one run win. Lefty Brad Douthit logged two hitless innings of relief and righty Steve Godawa picked up his fourth save of the season, allowing just a hit and an error in the ninth. The Rafters roll to 7-12 and drop the Loggers to 12-9.
The Rafters travel to Battle Creek for three over the weekend. The Rafters are back at Witter Field on Tuesday, June 29 for Guaranteed Win Night against the Green Bay Bullfrogs at 7:05. If the Rafters lose that night, every fan gets a free ticket to another Rafters home contest.
