BATTLE CREEK, MI (WAOW) - The Battle Creek Bombers broke out for six runs over the fifth and sixth innings and cruised to an 8-2 win over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Friday night.
Rafters' starter Damon McCormick matched zeros with Bombers right-hander Joe Battestelli through four innings. But in the fifth, McCormick allowed two solo home runs to get the Bombers on the board first.
Things started off badly all around for the Rafters in the bottom of the sixth. McCormick walked the first batter before an error put two on with no one out. Three singles later the Bombers led it 7-0. Relievers Jesse Arreola and Dan Johnson both allowed a run in their innings of relief.
Cody Koback singled to lead off the game, but the Rafters didn't have a base hit off Battestelli until the eighth inning. Ryan Palermo singled, Evan Laude doubled, and Garrett Branske walked to load the bases with no outs. The Rafters scored on a Justin Jirschele RBI single and a sac-fly from Koback, but left two on when the inning came to a close.
After limiting the damage in the eighth Battestelli stranded a lead double off the bat of Jenzen Torres in the ninth to tally his first complete game. The righty struck out eight Rafters to move to 3-1 on the season. With the loss Damon McCormick falls to 1-3.
