Crews sent to battle Canadian fires

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A crew of Wisconsin firefighters are battling wildfires in Manitoba.

Wisconsin and Manitoba are members of the Great Lakes Forest Fire Compact. Members assist each other upon request.

Manitoba fire officials have been battling lightning-sparked wildfires. Fire agencies from British Columbia and Minnesota already are helping combat the fires.

Manitoba officials asked for Wisconsin's help on Thursday.

The state Department of Natural Resources sent a 20-person crew of firefighters from around the state. Most of the crew left on Monday for a two-week assignment in The Pas, a town in northwest Manitoba.

Their jobs will center on pump and hose-laying in remote areas.
