WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Wisconsin Woodchucks won their home-away-home series with the Madison Mallards tonight, by winning the rubber match 5-1 at Athletic Park. The Woodchucks, led by starter Nick Capito (2-0) advance to 17-11 and remain in second place, while the Mallards fall to 10-16.
The ‘Chucks got things going in the bottom of the first, as Kevin Pillar drew a walk and promptly stole second base. Travis Whitmore would follow and run the count full before hitting a single to right field, scoring Kevin Pillar who was on the move. Grant Dozar would follow with a double and move Whitmore to third, before Ryan Fleming would knock them both home with a two RBI single. That would be it for Mallards starter Tyler Jones, as reliever Dillon Napoleon would come on in relief before Jones could even record an out.
The ‘Chucks would tack on another run in the bottom of the third, as Grant Dozar would lead off the inning with a walk. Chris Amezquita and Ryan Fleming would send him home by following with consecutive singles.
Woodchucks' starter Nick Capito would sail through the first four innings without much trouble, before bleeding an unearned run in the 5th. With one out in the 5th, Capito would walk designated hitter Adam Davis and make an errant pickoff attempt past first baseman Grant Dozar. Davis would take off and make it all the way home to score standing before the ball could be thrown in.
Although scoring five runs, the ‘Chucks offense was inefficient to say the least- as an inconsistent offensive attack would leave 11 runners on base throughout the course of the night.
The five runs posted would be enough however, as Nick Capito would go on to pitch an absolute gem. Capito would hurl 7.2 innings while allowing only four hits and two walks, while striking out five and picking up the win. Anthony Drobnick shut the door, coming on with two outs in the 8th and finish out the game.
With the win, the Woodchucks keep pace with the division leading and victorious Eau Claire Express. The ‘Chucks will make the trek to Battle Creek, Michigan tomorrow to face off with the bottom feeding Battle Creek Bombers in a three game series.
